 IIM KOLKATA vs IIM LUCKNOW

After completion of degree level education, many students think for further studies to enrich their professional career. This stage is very crucial for any student who particularly scores good percentage.  This interim period will be pervaded with anxieties and bit of agonies especially when they opt for management study.  Why it is so?  The reason is that very many institutions in India and across the globe, now advertise for their superiority to impart management programme.  

So, one has to research very thoroughly and select the particular management institution based on the market feed-back, expertise of teaching faculties and over all reputation of a particular management institution. 

Let us now draw comparison between two leading IIMs.   

Objectives of the management programme of these IIMs:
Both the colleges have almost the same objectives to impart management programme so that students can understand socio-economic, political, educational and environmental of modern societies and their characteristic values. 
To understand and acquire skills in the basic discipline and the functional areas of management so as to impart the same in their professional career. 
To develop analytical and innovative attitude and skills to bring changes and increase effectiveness and efficiency of an organizational structure.
To develop values and culture for society’s well being.

Their curriculum:
Both the management institutions have almost same management programmes spread over a period of one or two years consist of various semesters of post graduate diploma in management, post graduate programme in Agribusiness Management, and fellow programme in management.. Subjects are taught here as follows.

Infrastructural parameters and amenities:
Both the above IIMs are situated in big cities.   IIM, Kolkata is in a mega city.  Both these colleges are built up in buildings with aesthetic and soothing colors.  Various amenities like auditorium, well maintained library and high level of teachings through which the students are able to strengthen their skills for management education.

As for IIM, Kolkata, it is a city of livelihood, people are friendly and if someone loves various cuisine of Bengali flavor, he may like the place.  IIM, Lucknow is a place for good food of mughlais flavor.  

Kolkata is congested, thickly populated, transportation facility is over crowded and the people who stay outside particularly in a small town will find it very difficult to adjust this environment initially. This situation does not arise in Lucknow because relatively, it is a small city.    
Both the management colleges also impart management education for the working students and the professionals, who are not in a position to regularly attend the colleges.  

At IIM, Kolkata, the ambit of education is not only confined to classroom teaching.  Students are mingling freely with each other and in this process, become aware of life in the class future career planning.  This is over and above the academic teachings.  The essence of the teaching is to develop students’ mind.  The beauty of teaching is so special that the students are able to grasp fundamental things quickly.  These fundamentals are not related to academics only.

Student’s council of this college is very active.  They become the interface between the students and the faculty and the administration.  This council takes up all the related matters of students including their well beings.  They discuss things beyond the realm of academic pursuit.  Throughout the year, variety of sports, cultural, business and literary events are conducted in the campus.  These activities ultimately energize the students to channel their energy level more positively.   Joka campus where this IIM is situated is full of scenic beauty.  Immediately after wake up, students are greeted with the early morning chirping of various species of birds.  They also get the view of serene and calm wave less flow of water emanating from the lake that adorns the campus.

This campus is provided with the facilities of ICICI Bank and SBI Bank’s ATM, daily needs store, recreation centre equipped with swimming pool, basketball court, table tennis, badminton court and gymnasium, house keeping, washing machines etc.  They also have in house laundry service.   
This institution has completed 50 years in the year 2011 and it is the oldest IIM in the country which was set up on 13th November, 1961.

IIM, Lucknow was established in the year 1984.  This IIM is recognized as “Institute of Excellence” which is situated in 200 acres site at Sitapur, in the northern outskirts of Lucknow.  

They teach post graduate management programmes and also fellowship programme.  For both IIMs, the admission is done through common test.  GMAT is used for admission for the executive MBA programme.

This institute is 21 kms from Lucknow railway station and 31 kms from Lucknow airport.  IIM Kolkata is around 20 kms from Howrah railway station and 35 kms from the airport.

IIM Lucknow’s academic buildings are constructed in medieval Indian architectural style with red big wall structure. 

Here, the academic blocks consist of classrooms and seminar halls named as Bodhigrih-1 & 2. This IIM has a library which is of 3000 sq.ft. and has 5 reading halls and total capacity of 250 peoples.  Many other amenities like computer centre and fiber optic backbone network are also available.  As for social infrastructure, this campus has football, cricket, basketball, volley-ball, table tennis courts. It has also recreation and fitness centre.  The student’s residential complex has 2 buildings and a medical shop, the travel agency, super market, post office, saloon, coffee shop, ice-cream parlour and three restaurants. 

The new campus is composed of 2 large houses for nearly accommodating 175 students and the rooms are provided by attached balcony.  There is a special multi level dining hall which can accommodate 200 students.  The top floor of this common area serves for the purpose of intellectual.  The new residential complex is connected to the existing campus.  This main campus has an academic wing which accommodates theater hall, lecture hall, computer laboratory, incubation areas, offices, class rooms and syndicate rooms spread over 5 levels.  

Batch Profile:
As per the survey report, IIM Kolkata has an intake of management students of around 450 students.  Out of this, 70% students are enrolled for PGD course and balance for PGDCM.  The percentage of woman students is increased marginally from 12% to 15% for the last year.  This batch profile is also increased from 8% to 10% for overseas candidates who are enrolled through GMAT examination.  Year after year, number of overseas candidates is increased considerably compared to past two years.  
Overseas candidates are typically the students who have completed their under graduation.  The students who opt for this management education are not only the fresh but they have experience also.  The average work experience is anywhere between two to three years.  
Entrepreneurs also join this course.  Apart from engineers, the batch profile consists of doctors, economists, naval architects, accountants and scientists.  There are also the students who have graduated in history education, journalism, political science etc.      

Skill and fine tuning of teaching:
IIM, Kolkata is very famous to impart the teaching on the subject of finance management & economics.  In fact, this management college is specialized to give training on finance management with a special emphasis on economics and its various legislations.  So, the students who are desirous to make their career in finance stream, they must opt for this college.  Various research methodologies like qualitative and quantitative research, statistical data analysis, conceptual policies and theories of economics are taught here in great details so that the students get an in-depth idea of financial sector.
 
This management institution has been able to garner teaching success through research oriented teaching though it is not a research institution rather it is an educational institute.  New topics are always brought into the course and these new topics which address management issues are always on the fore front in the college.

IIM, Lucknow teaches Decision Science in their management programme, which is a part of this management course introduced to the students to a variety of a quantitative method that are very useful for solving managerial problems in transportation and tele-communication area. Although, transportation and tele-communication seem to have little in common from a layman perspective, a closure look at an optimization problem encounter in both the areas reveals that the underline methodological structures and methods are quite similar and very often lend themselves to the same side of tools and tackles.  This decision science is a part of 1st year under compulsory subject and also a subject under elective in the 2nd year. IIM Lucknow teaches other management subjects, but this decision science is a unique one. 

This particular subject is taught in IIM, Kolkata, but under the subject of marketing management.
